Licensing, Certification, Insurance, and Contract

Be certain that the exterior remodeling contractor you hire is properly and fully licensed and certified. “Simply ask the contractor to provide proof of their licensing and certification. This vital step will protect your interests and finances,” Wendy said. “Likewise, you’ll also want to make sure the contractor has Liability and Workman’s Compensation Insurance.” Exterior remodeling does pose some danger to workers, so you’ll want to review the insurance policy of the company you’re considering hiring. More specifically, the insurance policy should cover workplace injuries as well as material damages.

The company’s contract is also important, as it should provide a complete overview of the project to be completed, including the materials to be used, as well as the permits that will be obtained, a work scheduled, and the plan outlining the payment schedule.

Experience

Experience is crucial in terms of finding a trustworthy and reliable exterior remodeling contractor. So, you’ll want to do some research to ensure the company you hire has years of experience to stand on. The number of years of experience often directly impacts the outcome of a project. “For instance, a contractor with more experience can provide a client with greater detail and more precise information pertaining to a project’s timeline in addition to labor and resource costs in advance,” Wendy said. “Not to mention, a well-versed contractor will be far more competent and equipped to handle any unforeseen construction hiccups, should they occur, compared to an inexperienced contractor, who’s mistakes could have costly consequences. Be sure to not only look at the company’s website for reviews and testimonials, but use impartial resources such as Google Reviews, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as well. In addition, make sure the company is a member in good standing with area remodeling organizations, such as the local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).

Beyond craftsmanship, the quality of a project hinges upon the products and tools used by the exterior remodeling contractor. “Check to see if the contractor you’re considering hiring clearly identifies the products and tools they are associated with,” said Wendy. “When a contractor openly discloses this information, often on the company website, it demonstrates that they stand behind the quality of their projects. Plus, generally speaking, projects completed with high quality materials and tools tend to have a longer lifespan.”

Inspection

At the completion of a project, J&B conducts a comprehensive assessment of the job to ensure that all specifications of the contract have been completed. “We also provide a lien waiver, a manufacturer’s warranty, and a 12-year installation warranty,” Wendy said.

Enjoy Peace Of Mind

The only complaint I have is when I have J&B do my roof in another 30 years or so, is Dave their sales man (a great guy) would not guaranty I could get the same great crew I had this time. They did a fantastic job. Much better than the last roofing company did. A nice bunch of guys. Did a very nice job cleaning up. I'd give them 10 stars but 5 is the limit. If you need a roof done this is the company you want to do it. One more point I need to make. The guys that did the chimney flashing are artists. I went up on the roof when they were done and was very pleased with not only the roofing job but the sculptured sheet metal work. It's kind of a shame it's on the roof and not hanging on the family room wall :). You get the point. Hire em. You'll like em.

J & B did an amazing job from start to finish. The initial meeting at my home took place exactly at the time that was agreed upon and Scott was thorough in his explanations and transparent about costs. When the time came to begin the project, the team that showed up was friendly, professional and timely in getting the project done. The cleanup afterward was such that it looked like they hadn't been there at all. The roof looks great, there were no surprises and Scott came by to inspect the work and explain the warranty upon job completion. I would highly recommend them.
