May 30, 2024After spending most of the time indoors during the Wisconsin winter, we’re now turning our attention to outside as summer begins.
“The warm weather is a great opportunity to take a look at your home’s exterior, specifically its siding,” said Scott Cline, co-owner of J & B Construction. “This is important, as siding plays a major role in creating an inviting atmosphere.”
The act of changing the color of your siding can excite you while also providing a refreshing new look to your home. With so many hues to choose from, there are two major areas to take notice of when choosing a new siding shade.
The Style of the House
The architecture of your home is one of the most important features to consider when choosing a siding color. Most structures have a certain color set that complements the style. For example, neutral tones work better for colonial houses and bolder colors match the vibe of contemporary housing.
“Popular home styles in Wisconsin are ranches and bungalows,” Scott said. “We recommend siding in white, green, gray, blue, or other earthy tones.”
In addition to focusing on the house as a whole, look at the siding style. Does it have a mix of shingles and lap siding? If so, you could do the shingles and lap siding in two different shades of the same color.
Make sure to pay attention to your roof as well, as it is a large part of your house’s design, and the siding’s color should not clash with it.
“The general rule of thumb is lighter siding tones help houses blend in, while bold hues draw attention,” Scott said. “Bold siding colors on large houses make them look overpowering, but they highlight smaller houses well. It’s all about finding the right balance.
“When in doubt, gray siding is a neutral option that goes with mostly everything.”
The Surrounding Environment
The right siding shade also depends on your landscaping. “If your surroundings are full of trees, plants, shrubs, and a green lawn, earthy tones for your siding work well,” said Scott. “If you’re surrounded by a barer environment, bold colors are a great choice.”
Be sure to look at the houses on your block that are the same style as yours. You’ll want to pick a similar siding color; if your house stands out too much, it could negatively impact the resale of your home.
All in all, you should pick a siding color that you connect with and prefer. Look through online sources or magazines and see what strikes your fancy. If you like a modern or minimalistic feel, neutral colors are best. If your personality is vibrant and energy-driven, look at some saturated options.
Once you’ve chosen a shade, pick up some siding samples. Place them up against your home during different times of the day. This way, you can tweak the color or change your mind before moving forward with the project.
