Busting the Myths Surrounding Siding Installation in Winter
Dec 17, 2024When winter sends a blanket of snow and cold winds to Wisconsin, many homeowners often don’t pay much attention to the outside of their homes. While it’s easy to assume exterior renovation projects are perfect for the spring and summer, a house’s siding can be installed anytime from November through March.
“Believe it or not, there are benefits to installing siding during the colder months,” said Scott Cline, co-owner of J & B Construction. “With over 60 years of experience, you can trust that J & B Construction can make your siding look its best, even during the winter.”
The following are a few misconceptions about siding installation amidst low temperatures:
It costs more, and it will take longer to install siding in the winter.
Because homeowners sometimes rush to address home improvement projects in the spring and summer, contractors may not be as busy from January to March. A lighter schedule means more flexibility and time to spend on your project.
“Winter is normally a less busy time for our team,” Scott said. “Often, that means we can get a project done a little quicker than we normally do because projects are not competing with each other. In addition, because materials are not in high demand in the colder months, the project costs might be lower.”
It’s too cold to install siding properly.
Many assume the weather will delay siding installation dramatically. “In fact, in the winter, we have the same number of weather delays as we do in the warmer months,” said Scott. “Just like a snowstorm can delay timing during the winter, rain does the same in the spring and summer. The only other condition that will make us stop work is extreme wind-chill.”
While vinyl siding is harder to work with in low temperatures, the J & B Construction team has experience installing it and fiber cement siding during winter. Both materials are more resistant to cold weather.
My house will feel chilly while the siding is installed.
When contractors install siding in the cold, they often install it in small spaces instead of the whole house at once. “A few panels by themselves have little insulation value, so removing them briefly won’t impact the temperature inside your home,” Scott said. If the home does feel cooler, it will only be for a short time.
A great advantage to installing new siding in the winter is the improvement in energy efficiency. Older siding is more prone to leaks and cracks that expose moisture and the cold, and newer siding with an extra layer of insulation will allow you to enjoy a warmer home.
If your house receives an upgrade now, you’ll notice how great the exterior looks in the springtime. With siding installation out of the way, you can take full advantage of your garden, deck, and patio while the warm weather is upon us.
