Preparing Your Home for a Window Installation Project

Feb 01, 2022

Although window installation projects aren’t largely associated with wintertime, windows can be safely installed during winter months. “Professional window installers take special precautions to ensure your home stays warm, clean, and safe throughout the duration of the project,” said Scott Cline, J&B Construction owner. “Likewise, there are steps homeowners can take to properly prepare for their upcoming window installation project.”

Clear the Clutter

Evaluate the surrounding areas both inside and outside the window (or windows) you’re having installed. If you have any items adjacent to the windows, remove them prior to the installers’ arrival. “This includes window treatments, nearby furniture or décor, personal items, and even foliage,” Scott said. “Be sure to trim back or remove any plants or shrubs that obstruct the path to the windows. Whether it’s curtains or plants, the window installers need clear and direct access to the project. This not only helps ensure the project goes smoothly and efficiently, but it also minimizes the risk of accidents and property damage.”

Be Mindful of Fragile Possessions

A window installation project produces dust and debris, so if you have fragile possessions located anywhere in the room, especially electronics as they are particularly susceptible to damage caused by dust, consider removing them from the space altogether. If that’s not possible, be sure to fully cover the items with a plastic sheet.

Ensure Easy Access

The window installers need to have full access to your home as they’ll be going in and out during the installation process. This means you’ll have to deactivate any alarm systems you have in place and ensure the doors won’t lock behind them.

Protect Your Family, Pets, and Home

It’s no surprise that window installation requires heavy materials, tools, and equipment, so it’s important to distance children and pets as far away from the project as possible to avoid injury. “As for your home, the window installers create insulation barriers using plastic sheeting that extends floor-to-ceiling,” said Scott. “This not only helps to confine the spread of debris and dust, but it also offers protection against the elements. In other words, it helps to maintain a more comfortable indoor air temperature, whether it’s the cold of winter or the heat of summer.”

Enjoy Peace Of Mind
The only complaint I have is when I have J&B do my roof in another 30 years or so, is Dave their sales man (a great guy) would not guaranty I could get the same great crew I had this time. They did a fantastic job. Much better than the last roofing company did. A nice bunch of guys. Did a very nice job cleaning up. I'd give them 10 stars but 5 is the limit. If you need a roof done this is the company you want to do it. One more point I need to make. The guys that did the chimney flashing are artists. I went up on the roof when they were done and was very pleased with not only the roofing job but the sculptured sheet metal work. It's kind of a shame it's on the roof and not hanging on the family room wall :). You get the point. Hire em. You'll like em.
We live in a historic designated neighborhood and recently had our 30 year wood shingle roof replaced with another wood roof and new gutters. From Day 1 of the project to the final day, the entire team was responsive, professional, and very competent. When some minor changes were proposed by us they quickly and effortlessly complied. After going through this experience with J&B, I would highly recommend them to anyone considering a roof and gutter replacement, whether it be a simple or complicated project.
J & B did an amazing job from start to finish. The initial meeting at my home took place exactly at the time that was agreed upon and Scott was thorough in his explanations and transparent about costs. When the time came to begin the project, the team that showed up was friendly, professional and timely in getting the project done. The cleanup afterward was such that it looked like they hadn't been there at all. The roof looks great, there were no surprises and Scott came by to inspect the work and explain the warranty upon job completion. I would highly recommend them.
