Siding Trends to Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal
Jun 26, 2023Even if you aren’t preparing to sell your home, improving the home’s “curb appeal,” or it’s outside appearance, is important for many reasons.
No one wants to be the one home in the cul-de-sac with the chipping paint, faded siding, and a dull appearance — and be the target of the homeowner’s association or neighborhood gossip!
“If you want to spruce up your home, consider replacing the siding,” said Wendy Cline, J&B Construction co-owner. “Besides improving the home’s curb appeal, installing new siding will also help protect its structural integrity and boost energy efficiency.”
As a homeowner, keeping your home up to date with the latest trends is key to having a modern and stylish home. Currently trending …
Color
When it comes to choosing siding, color is an important element because it really is the first impression of a home. Almost all siding manufacturers, whether they are vinyl, fiber cement, or engineered wood, will offer assorted color combinations.
“What is trending currently and what has been around for a few years is darker colored siding for a dramatic effect. Deep hues of black, blue, gray, burgundy, and green can be found,” Wendy said. “But white is not going away. Homeowners are accenting their white siding with black shutters, window trim, and front doors.”
Not any less of a trend is a monochromatic color scheme where siding, trim, accents, and shutter colors are in various shades of the primary color.
Mixing and Matching
Mixing and matching is also a trend more homeowners are embracing. This involves using various siding styles, colors, and textures. Blending siding is a great choice if you want to accentuate a part of the home or make a design statement. “For example, you may combine metal or stone materials with vinyl or incorporate vertical siding,” said Wendy. “Vertical siding is composed of short width boards installed upright from top to bottom. It adds visual height and depth whether it’s used on the whole home or as an accent.” Another way to add visual interest is incorporating board and batten, which is the use of wide and narrow planks.
Accents
On the rise is adding wood elements. “Wood accents can be in the form of wood headers over the windows, wood posts on your front porch, or wood shutters,” she said. Other ways to accent:
- Extend the indoor cladding to the structure’s outside, such as the entranceway or front porch.
- For contrast, add shakes and scallops on gables and dormer walls.
- Corner posts provide a finished edge at an inside or outside corner. The siding from adjoining walls fits neatly into the inside or outside corner post channels. They can be traditional or decorative, fluted, flat, or one-piece and can be of contrasting or complementary color to the siding.
- Add door and window mantels (like a fireplace mantel). Set on the top of the window, the mantel can be a flat panel or more ornate and gives the home a custom look.
- Gable vents, which allow ventilation of the attic, add extra visual appeal if its color matches the home’s trim accents.
- Gable pediments or brackets (on the triangular area of siding under the roof) can be a focal point. A color that contrasts with the siding makes it pop.
Siding Materials
While there are many siding material options, fiber cement is becoming increasingly popular. “As its name suggests, fiber cement is a combination of cement and wood fiber, plus other additives,” Wendy said. “Fiber cement resembles wood, comes in various colors, and is slow to fade. It is also durable and long-lasting.”
Vinyl siding is decades old, and in its early years didn’t receive rave reviews. But manufacturers have made great improvements to vinyl. It’s created to withstand elements from heavy wind to hail. It’s also resistant to excessive amounts of moisture, which prevents rotting and corrosion, and it won’t warp or rust.
“We also offer LP Smartside, an engineered wood composed of wood fibers, metal, and synthetic polymers. This blend of materials combines aspects and features of other siding products into one attractive, low-maintenance package,” said Wendy. “The wood in Smartside also helps it retain a more natural appearance than other siding options. Smartside is available in several styles, including shakes and lap siding, so you can customize your home’s appearance exactly as you like.”
