These 2025 Roofing Trends Serve as Solutions
Jan 07, 2025If you’ve waited the average of 20 years to replace your roof, much has changed since you last thought about the construction and design of a new roof. New trends have shaped the roofing industry to offer homeowners features for their lifestyles and preferences.
“Keeping up with trends is important in constructing a roof that has staying power,” said Wendy Cline, co-owner of J & B Construction. “We’ll see roofs that focus on design, sustainability, and energy efficiency in 2025.” Here’s what roofing will look like this year:
Sustainability
Sustainability has been a buzzword in the last couple of years. Eco-friendly roofing options have helped homeowners reduce their carbon footprint.
“More and more homeowners are using roofing shingles made from recycled plastic and rubber or constructing cool roofs that reflect heat and light away from the home,” said Wendy. “The next up-and-coming sustainability feature will be green roofs with vegetation and soil layers.”
Metal is the most sustainable roofing material, as it is often made out of recycled materials and can be recycled once it has hit the end of its life. A metal roof lasts anywhere from 40 to 70 years, can withstand extreme weather conditions, helps energy efficiency with a reflective coating, and looks like traditional shingles that come in a variety of colors, textures, and finishes.
Energy Efficiency
Technology advances have allowed solar power options to be more accessible to the everyday homeowner.
One feature becoming popular is solar shingles, which, unlike solar panels, are sleek and blend in with other materials on the roof to generate renewable energy. Shingles and panels can also be treated to be climate-resistant. During harsh Wisconsin winters, roofing materials with improved insulation can help regulate indoor temperatures in extreme cold and heat.
“Smart solar monitoring has also become trendy,” said Wendy. “From their smartphones, homeowners can be alerted to leaks or water damage, keep track of weather conditions, and automatically adjust the roof’s optimal solar energy production. This allows the home to be better protected and reduces long-term maintenance costs.”
In addition, in the middle of a power outage, excess energy from battery storage systems now paired with roofs can provide reliability and energy independence.
Design
“Customization is a roofing trend at the forefront of 2025,” Wendy said. “Your roof should reflect your personality and boost your home’s curb appeal.”
Moving away from traditional neutral colors, homeowners are choosing bolder colors on the roof, like blue, which goes well with white siding, red, which pairs with gray siding, and plum, which matches blue or khaki siding.
Mixed materials, like using metal and asphalt shingles together, are also in style, enhancing the aesthetic of the home with a more textured and unique appearance.
