Tips to Keep Homes Safe
Sep 30, 2016People return to their homes each day to seek shelter and with a belief that their home is safe from both weather and intruders. J&B Construction offers ways in which you can remodel your home’s exterior to make it safer.
“First things first, make sure you have a proper door with a secure lock,” said Scott Cline, owner of J&B Construction. “Install a sturdy door with a deadbolt lock and have it locked at all times.” Cline recommends deadbolts that have a one-inch horizontal bolt and an outside plate made of steel.
The door of your home should also be durable enough to withstand Wisconsin weather and possible intruders. Doors are made with various different materials. Fiberglass is a popular choice because it comes in many different colors. “When it comes to the most sturdy and durable option, wood doors are the best alternative, as they resist wear and tear, they are the least likely to dent, and they keep weather and unwelcomed visitors out,” Cline said.
Installing new windows with proper locks and strong glass will not only keep burglars out, it will also help protect the home against the affects of rain, snow, and wind. “There are a variety of styles and frames to choose from, including those with an option of double-glazing, which save energy and keep the cold out,” Cline said.
Light up your home with timed or motion-sensor lights. “Keeping lights on will give an intruder the impression that you’re home, reducing the likelihood of a break in,” said Cline. “When you do go out of town, ask a neighbor to take in your mail or any packages, as lingering mail will mark your home as an easy target.”
