What’s New in the Roofing Industry?
Mar 02, 2022
A home’s roof serves a variety of purposes, including as a barrier and protector from the elements as well as being a decorative component for the exterior. With that in mind, Scott Cline, J&B Construction owner, offers updates related to roofing materials.
Asphalt Shingles are Here to Stay
Asphalt shingles truly stand the test of time because year after year, they continue to remain one of the most popular roofing materials on the market. This is largely due to the fact they’re an economical, versatile, and dependable roofing material option. “For instance, asphalt shingles come in a virtually endless array of colors, finishes, and styles,” Scott said. “This is particularly beneficial when you’re trying to compliment your home’s specific aesthetic. Thankfully, whether your home’s exterior is classified as colonial, contemporary, or something in between, asphalt shingles work well to match all home architectural styles. Moreover, asphalt shingles can even be designed to mimic the look of other roofing materials, such as cedar shakes for example.”
As for lifespan, asphalt shingles have an average life expectancy of up to 30 years. This can vary depending on the type of asphalt shingle installed, i.e., 3-tab, dimensional, or premium shingles. “Regardless of the specific type, asphalt in general is equipped to withstand extreme temperatures, which is especially helpful in a Midwestern climate,” he said.
Using Complementary Colors to Increase Curb Appeal
It’s been a longstanding trend to either opt for a neutral color or a color within the same color scheme as your home’s exterior when selecting a roof color. The idea behind this trend is to ensure that the roof seamlessly blends in with the rest of the home. Fast forward to the present day and more and more homeowners are looking to accentuate their new roof with the use of complimentary colors, or colors situated opposite one another on the color wheel.
“For example, if your home has navy blue siding, then you’d want to choose a lighter colored roof, such as a light grey or a tan. Another example is a home with light, olive green siding, white trim, and a black roof,” said Scott. “In both examples, the contrasting colors help ensure the roof pops, which not only means your roof becomes an exterior focal point, but your home’s curb appeal receives a boost as well.”
Metal Roofing Rises in Popularity
Metal roofing trails closely behind asphalt as it has recently seen a steady increase in demand – a trend that is only expected to grow in 2022. “Beyond the stunning aesthetic appeal metal roofing provides, it’s also an extremely durable material. In fact, metal roofing can last anywhere from 40 to 70 years or more, depending on the type of metal used,” said Scott. Most commonly, metal roofs consist of steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, and tin. They can come in various forms, such as metal tile, metal slate, and standing seam to name a few.
Moreover, thanks to metal’s exceptional strength, it’s fully equipped to withstand severe weather, including hail and high-speed winds, and in some cases, even hurricane-force winds. “Metal also has a unique characteristic in that it repels moisture as opposed to it soaking in,” Scott said. “Plus, it’s versatile in that it comes in a variety of colors, allowing you to effortlessly match your home’s specific architectural style.”
