Make Your Siding Priority

Apr 03, 2024

When it comes to home improvement projects to check off your list in the spring and summer, your home’s siding might not immediately come to mind.

“Discarding your old siding for new material may not seem to be the most exciting change, but it holds great importance to your home’s functionality,” said Scott Cline, co-owner of J&B Construction. “Not only does your home’s siding affect the value and curb appeal of your property, but it also protects your home — and your family by extension — from unwanted, outside elements.”

Your house’s siding isn’t doing its job if it doesn’t look the part. It might be time to replace your siding if you notice:

Loose or Missing Panels

“If you see loose or lost panels, it’s an obvious sign that you need to replace your siding,” said Scott. Siding that either isn’t there or is falling off your house can no longer protect it from excessive moisture, insects, mold/mildew, and other conditions.

Faded Color

When the color fades on your siding panels, that means the weatherproofing on the panels is losing its strength. “Faded color is an indicator to start thinking about replacement options, like vinyl, fiber cement, or LP Smartside siding,” Scott said.

Cracked or Warped Panels

If panels are cracked, warped, or rotted, they need to be removed. “Even a small crack is a cause for concern,” said Scott. “Cracks can lead to larger problems, especially if the layer beneath the siding is falling apart.”

Bubbles Underneath the Surface

“Bubbles in the siding mean that water has gotten trapped,” Scott said. “Moisture has found its way inside, which means your home’s siding is not working correctly; one of its main purposes is to keep moisture out.”

Chipping Paint

If the paint on the siding is beginning to chip within a few years, you might be putting a large amount of work—and money— into maintaining your siding. “Paint on siding should last about eight to 10 years,” said Scott. “If you’re repainting the home’s siding every three to six years, it’s time for new, low maintenance siding—like vinyl siding.”

In addition, if your attic and window insulation are decent, and you see your energy bills rise, your siding might be the culprit. Old and damaged siding does not allow a house to be heated or cooled efficiently.

“Homeowners should inspect their siding every year,” Scott said. “If you notice any of the above signals, seriously consider replacing the panels. It might make most sense cost and benefit wise if you remove the siding now versus waiting until the home develops more serious issues.”

Enjoy Peace Of Mind
The only complaint I have is when I have J&B do my roof in another 30 years or so, is Dave their sales man (a great guy) would not guaranty I could get the same great crew I had this time. They did a fantastic job. Much better than the last roofing company did. A nice bunch of guys. Did a very nice job cleaning up. I'd give them 10 stars but 5 is the limit. If you need a roof done this is the company you want to do it. One more point I need to make. The guys that did the chimney flashing are artists. I went up on the roof when they were done and was very pleased with not only the roofing job but the sculptured sheet metal work. It's kind of a shame it's on the roof and not hanging on the family room wall :). You get the point. Hire em. You'll like em.
We live in a historic designated neighborhood and recently had our 30 year wood shingle roof replaced with another wood roof and new gutters. From Day 1 of the project to the final day, the entire team was responsive, professional, and very competent. When some minor changes were proposed by us they quickly and effortlessly complied. After going through this experience with J&B, I would highly recommend them to anyone considering a roof and gutter replacement, whether it be a simple or complicated project.
J & B did an amazing job from start to finish. The initial meeting at my home took place exactly at the time that was agreed upon and Scott was thorough in his explanations and transparent about costs. When the time came to begin the project, the team that showed up was friendly, professional and timely in getting the project done. The cleanup afterward was such that it looked like they hadn't been there at all. The roof looks great, there were no surprises and Scott came by to inspect the work and explain the warranty upon job completion. I would highly recommend them.
